Vinland Saga, a Japanese historical animation series, will return for a second season in January 2023. Season 2 is being produced by Mappa Studio. Wit Studio, which animated the first season, has previously said that they will not be returning for the second season.
Shuhei Yabuta, the director of the first season of Vinland Saga, stated that the staff for the second season will remain the same, however the studio will change. Yabuta is currently employed at Mappa Studio. Yabuta previously directed Vinland Saga season 1 as a freelancer, and he is now back to direct season 2.
The story is set in a frigid hamlet in Iceland, where a lad named Thorfinn grew up hearing legends about sailors who traversed the oceans in search of the promised “Vinland,” which is said to be warm and fertile. Thorfinn and his father are assaulted by Vikings while travelling. Thorfinn’s father is killed while attempting to save him, and Thorfinn’s journey to take revenge starts.
Season 2’s returning cast members include Shuhei Yabuta as director, Koji Seko as composer, Abiru Takahiro as character designer, Yusuke Takeda as art director, Satoshi Hashimoto as colour designer, and Yutaka Yamada as composer.
Makoto Yukimura wrote and illustrated the manga that inspired the anime series. It is presently available in Japan in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine. The manga series is distributed in English by Kodansha USA for North American audiences. The manga first appeared in 2005 and has now been collected into 26 volumes.
